Granata

Spero vi piaccia così com'è piaciuto a me farla! :)

I made this necklace with copper, beads of garnet and rose quartz, and red czech beads.

I have to admit that I adore pomegranates for a lot of reasons!.
The first one and most important is the symbolic meaning: in ancient times pomegranate was a symbol of both Life and Death thanks to its juice which is red as blood, the blood of sacrifice and the menstrual blood, and thanks to the wealth of seeds.
Soon it became the sacred fruit of all those Goddesses and Gods who presided over Life and Death:
_ Kore-Persephone-Proserpina, who ate three pomegranate seeds when she arrived in the Underworld after Hades's rape, so that she had to spend there three months each year. In this myth the Goddess represents the retiring of Life during the Winter season and the returnig of Life in Spring time, so Kore is the symbolical seed which in autumn descends in the earth, there rests in winter the period in which it takes root in the soil, and from which the new plant sprouts in spring.
_ Dionysus-Bacchus-Fufluns, who was the patron of all juicy fruits (such as also grape) that were symbol of the abundance of Nature's gifts, of which the first one is Life itself and this God was a representation of the urgency to live savagely and completely our own life. So this God represents the ripened fruit and the summer time.
_ Mater Matuta, an ancient Goddess worshipped in Campania (Italy) and who presided to the births and was usually represented as a seated woman bringing in her arms all her children or as a woman bringing in her hands a pomegranate and a dove.
_ Hera, who presided over marriage and births; in ancient times women who desired to be pregnant brought pomegranates to her altars in her sanctuary near Sele river, because they believed they would have a lot of children as the fruit had a lot of seeds. Nowadays some ruins remain of the great sanctuary, but Hera with the pomegranate in the hand lives in what we can consider her new reincarnation: the Madonna del Granato (Madonna of Pomegranate), whose church stands in an area near the ancient sanctuary.

The second reason is that I adore this fruit and I adore eating it in the seasons when we can find it at the greengrocer.
Eating it is like you're eating the fruit of the wealth of the Earth, its labor during the summertime to make the fruit grow and ripen and its particular taste is an enchantment of enjoyment while its little seeds charm your eyes with their colour which recalls the colour and the beauty of the ruby.

Finally I have to say something about the crystals I used. Being pomegranate an emblem of life and a symbol of the Goddesses and Gods described above, I choose to combine the garnet (that helps in coming out from gloomy mood and feelings to joyous ones, helps to love life and living it in a more active way and in harmony with other people) with rose quartz (that opens our heart to the others teaching us the importance of being sympathetic and compassionate and teaching us to recognise our and others' value and not to play down the importance of it), two crystals that can be considered divine gifts to our life in order to live it not alone, but sharing this precious gift with others. If we want to see also to the physical body, both crystals help to keep in health the circulatory system and the sexual organs, the apparatuses that preside to life and its procreation.

Hope you'll enjoy it as I did makin' it! :)
